Laura Marks is a realist painter who works in watercolour and oil paints ... generally working on a smaller scale.

The subjects of Laura's paintings are derived from Laura's personal experiences and may include portraits, architecture, landscapes and gardens and a variety of still life.

Her work has a surreal flavour, which on occasion will gracefully spill over into outright surrealism.

Laura's earlier works were always from life ... whether in portraiture, landscape or still life. Her eye now developed - she also uses photographs for reference. As time imposes its own restraints and Laura's desire to create her images grows incrementally ... her photographs hold the details of memories of past observations.

At an early age, Laura showed great musical promise, (to this day is no slouch as a chanteuse - bring back The Fabulettes!) but alas, to the greater loss of the musical community, visual arts held more sway. However, her musical sensibilities of rhythm, counterpoint, harmony and mood are abundantly in evidence in her paintings.

Entropy is a recurrent theme. The effects of time hold a fascination, both in considering the changes that occur to a subject during the course of the creation of a picture, and the changes that occur to people or things during their life-span - a theme especially drawn upon as Laura created all the paintings for the printing of the Toronto Real Estate 2000 Millennium Calendar, an extensive project which consisted of interpretations of pictures of classic and heritage buildings within the Greater Toronto Area.
